Casa Haas of the Instituto Municipal de Cultura, Turismo y Arte was the stage of the last Sunday concert of the XV Gordon Campbell Season.
Maestro Campbell expressed his excitement and satisfaction for the season, as he assured “it has been a pleasure and a success.”
The quartet of musicians, made up of Omar Morales, Anthony E. Veloz, Germán Latorre Dorce and Maestro Campbell performed musical pieces that ranged from pre-Hispanic to contemporary instruments during the last concert entitled: “The art of the Horn from the beginning.”
The audience had the experience of knowing and listening to pieces by Mozart and Beethoven played by natural horns used at that time to gradually reach contemporary musical styles. Transitions of musical genres paraded in this concert: Jazz, Swinging, Charleston, Soft shoe and Barbershop were applauded in Casa Haas.
A cow horn, a Jewish ceremonial shofar, a sea shell and other wind musical instruments were used by the quartet to start the program with: The happy huntsman by Alfred Diewits.
The love for the horn in maestro Gordon Campbell was born when he was in fifth grade and he was given a trumpet, then he was given a saxophone in the shape of a horn, he played it and in a short time it was exchanged for a French horn. Campbell began to learn French horn with a teacher who had a band that had won national and international awards since 1930, by then it was 1958.
Since then, what was an extra activity for Gordon Campbell, became something that he has done all his life, playing the French horn.
The talent for playing the French horn has led Maestro Campbell to play chamber music in various parts of the United States; arriving in Mexico he was invited as First Horn of the National Symphony, from there to UNAM and managed to record the 4 Mozart Concertos with EMI CAPITOL and was surprisingly invited as Orchestra Director.
Today I combine the two things I love: playing the horn and conducting an orchestra, celebrated Maestro Gordon Campbell at the conclusion of the XV Season that bears his name.
