This Friday, March 21st and Saturday, March 22nd at 8:00 pm, the Ángela Peralta Theater hosts the performance “Waltz Between the Shadows,” featuring live music, singing, and choreography to tell the story of two virtuoso Mexican artists, Juventino Rosas and Ángela Peralta “El Ruiseñor Mexicano.”
Musicians from the Mazatlán Camerata will participate, under the direction of maestro Sergio Freeman; The play is written by Oliver Mayer and translated into Spanish by Lucía Leonor Enríquez. The perspective on the lives of these two artists is from a dream of Juventino Rosas watching waltzes and listening to arias by Ángela Peralta.
“Waltz Between the Shadows” addresses Juventino’s musical influence on pianist Scott Joplin. The use of choreography and multimedia images will transport the viewer back in time, making them laugh, sing, and learn about two great figures in the history of music in Mexico and around the world.

The director of this theatrical show, Alberto Barboza, explained that Oliver Mayer, the play’s writer, researched the life of Juventino Rosas using one of the few books in existence. Barboza, meanwhile, searched for books on the subject in Mexico City, without complete success.
This production aims to highlight the talents of Ángela and Juventino. The production lasts one hour and forty minutes, features choreography by Víctor Manuel Ruiz and uses multimedia images. It is in Spanish and is rated for teens and adults.
Internationally Renowned Mexican Musicians
Juventino Rosas was a prominent 19th-century Mexican composer and violinist, world-renowned for his beautiful waltz “Sobre las Olas,” which has been performed and recorded countless times around the world. Despite his short life, he left a significant musical legacy that has transcended borders and generations. He composed more than 90 musical pieces, including waltzes, polkas, and other salon works.
Ángela Peralta was born on July 6, 1845, and died in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, on August 30, 1883, after contracting yellow fever. She was nicknamed “The Mexican Nightingale.” She was an internationally renowned Mexican soprano during the 19th century who conquered major European stages before her 20th birthday. She was the first Mexican woman to perform at La Scala in Milan.
