On a bright and warm morning, the “30 de Abril Elementary School Children’s Day” was filled with sounds evoking magical worlds, deep emotions, and shared memories. A string quintet, made up of musicians from the Municipal Arts Center, committed to cultural dissemination, offered an unforgettable concert for children.
The presentation of the Cultura in Education program of the Institut de Cultura, Turismo y Arte de Mazatlan included a carefully selected repertoire to spark children’s interest, including songs from Disney films, the iconic Mario Bros. video game, and masterpieces by world-famous composers such as Mozart, Scott Joplin, and Carlos Gardel. The response from the children was immediate and enthusiastic: attentive, engaged, and visibly moved, the students were swept away by the magic of live music.
One of the most enriching moments was an interactive activity where the children were able to identify the instruments that make up a string quintet: violins, viola, cello, and double bass. This activity not only sparked their curiosity but also strengthened their auditory skills and musical memory.
The Principal of 30 de Abril Elementary School, María del Rosario Vázquez Navarro, proudly expressed the importance of this type of encounter: “I think it’s extremely important for children to have this kind of exposure to culture, as it may motivate them to attend an arts school in the future.” She also recognized the work of the Instituto de Cultura de Mazatlan and its team for their commitment, dedication, and sensitivity in bringing art closer to children.
Music as a vehicle for comprehensive education
Through these musical performances featuring emerging artists trained at the CMA, the Instituto de Cultura de Mazatlan aims to awaken the imagination, promote respect for cultural diversity, and open the doors to artistic vocations that might otherwise remain dormant. Bringing music to public schools democratizes access to beauty, artistic discipline, and the possibilities of a more fulfilling life.
