In her short but fruitful artistic career, soprano Vanessa Gama can now boast of having sung with Javier Camarena, the Mexican tenor who, despite his youth, has become a legend of world opera.
Audiences have surrendered to the famous singer’s voice on major opera stages, such as the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Teatro Real in Madrid.
At the beginning of April, the Sociedad Artística Sinaloense (SAS) launched a call for sopranos, the prize of which was to sing with a famous tenor.
“Right now I’m applying for every call I can because obviously my career is just beginning, and that’s the most important thing,” says Vanessa Gama.
A week later, the results of the call were announced, and the young soprano was the winner. In the audition, she performed “Estrellita” by Manuel M. Ponce, a song that propelled her to the forefront.
SAS director Leonor Quijada informed Vanessa that maestro Javier Camarena had selected her to participate in his concert celebrating her 20th anniversary.
The concert took place on April 10th at the Pablo de Villavicencio Theater in Culiacán, Sinaloa, and the young soprano performed a duet with maestro Javier Camarena: “Una parola…chiedi all’aura” from Donizetti’s Elise d’Amore.
As if that weren’t enough, tenor Javier Camarena gave Vanessa Gama the opportunity as a soloist to perform “Caro Nome” from Rigoletto and “In a Country of Fable” from La Tabernera del Puerto, accompanied by master pianist Ángel Rodríguez.
The experience the performer gained consisted of Camarena’s corrections and advice to ensure her performance was enjoyable and unforgettable, before a theater full of opera connoisseurs.
“I owe my training in the Bachelor of Singing program to José Miguel Valenzuela, and my training at the Opera Workshop to Patrón de Rueda. They have led me down this path,” said Vanessa Gama.
