Don Quijote, inspired by the original work by Marius Petipa with music by Léon Minkus, is presented this Thursday, March 23rd at eight o’clock in the evening at the Ángela Peralta Theater.
Invited by the Instituto de Cultura de Mazatlán to enhance the cultural offer of Spring Season 2023, the National Dance Company under the artistic direction of Elisa Carrillo and Cuauhtémoc Nájera presents their own version of Don Quijote, one of the best dance works of all times, inspired by the novel written by Miguel de Cervantes.
Although the ballet is called Don Quixote, the protagonist is not the famous hidalgo nor his squire Sancho, but a woman named Kitri. The story revolves around this female character who embodies the role of the heroine.
Kitri is a brave woman, capable of saying no, she bets on what she wants and is in love with the barber Basilio, but her father wants to force her to marry bourgeois Camacho, Gamache in the ballet.
The ballet Don Quijote was originally choreographed by Marius Petipa for the Bolshoi Theater and the musical composition was provided by Ludwig Minkus.
It is a colorful representation that broke away from other ballets of the time, such as Swan Lake, in which ethereal and supernatural figures appeared, to focus on the people of the town.
Another distinctive aspect is the strong inspiration of the composers, in Spanish ballet and character dances, for example, many twists of the body and shoulders are performed, always within the classical ballet technique.
In the ballet Don Quixote, the influence of Spanish dance is notorious as Petipa dressed the characters in typical clothing and accessories such as castanets, fans and flowers on their heads.
Tickets at the Ángela Peralta Theater box office $500.00 $400.00 $300.00 and $200.00. Reports to 669 982 4446 Ext. 103.
