Desiree Velázquez, Queen of the Centennial of the Floral Games
Mazatlán, Sinaloa, February 8, 2025.- With a perfect score in the criteria and beauty stages, Lucero Lizárraga Salcido obtained the title of Queen of the Mazatlán International Carnaval 2025 “La Perla” and Desiré Velázquez Ayón won second place in the Queens Election contest and will be crowned as Queen of the Centennial of the Floral Games.
Both contestants stood out in the stages of the contest, their answers to the questions excited the audience, the question to Lucero was about Mazatlan pride and in Desiré the theme of women inspired her to motivate the applause of the attendees, their costumes dazzled on the catwalk and the dominance of the stage was notable.
Upon hearing the titles assigned with white roses in their hands, the new queens broke into tears, the colors of the confetti and walking together on the catwalk under the musical notes of the papaquis was the image of the rebirth of the most recognized culture of the port.
The Election of Queens of Carnaval Mazatlan was held at the Angela Peralta Theater, which was filled with the presence of the supporters of each of the twelve candidates who competed for the coveted crowns.
With a choreography of marine allegory performed by the Vilanova Ballet directed by Montserrat Millán and Carlos Coronel, the night began, which was eagerly awaited by many Mazatlan residents who listened to a fragment of a poem by Carlos MacGregor, the most awarded poet in the history of the Floral Games.
The candidates emerged from the sea projected through multimedia images to stand on the stage, the narrator of the show provoked the cry of the colorful cheers by declaiming: “Today the oyster opens from which will be born, like Venus, the new sovereigns who will inscribe their name in our Carnaval history!”.
During the event, Rocío Osuna, Queen of the Mazatlán Carnaval 2002, and Karla Rivas, Queen of the Carnaval 2019, mentioned that “La Perla” (The Pearl), the motto of the current edition of the biggest party, seeks to exalt the pride of the people of the port, that the pearls of the American Pacific have carried Mazatlán in their name since 1856 and that since 1827, the people of Mazatlán have cultivated a deep love for the endearing carnaval tradition.
Once again, a choreography of dancers expressed the influence of Italy in the colorful and festive elements of the Carnaval party. From France, the celebration of the word was adopted to make the Floral Games and from Greece, the mermaids that appear in the elements of the identity of the city.
The 12 candidates appeared in order: Lesly Desireé Acosta, Mariana Valverde, Samantha Paulina Godoy, Sandra Cecilia Tirado, Mariant Itzel Franco, Grecia Fernanda Rodríguez, Fernanda Lizbeth Velasco, Desiré Velázquez, Lucero Lizárraga, María Fernanda Ramírez, Evelyn María Pineda and Melissa Cuevas.
With all the candidates present on stage, the honorable jury was introduced, made up of: Alfredo Cuadras, Rosy Beltrán, Jaime Atondo, Celia Jáugueri, Víctor de Rueda, Mónica Coppel, Juan José Rodríguez, Esperanza Rendón, Eduardo Blanco and Dr. Ana Chang.
The aspects to be evaluated in the first stage were: Coherence in the words, Confidence in the answers, Development of the topic, Appropriate use of language and Time management.
In the second stage: Personality, Beauty, Audience Control, Catwalk Management and Stage Control were rated.
The voting of each stage was witnessed by the Notary Public, Lic. José Manuel Magallón Osuna, while representatives of each candidate supervised the election process. The voting process was coordinated by Abrís Ileana Tiznado, Director of Public Relations of the Instituto de Cultura.
The effort of all the candidates was recognized with applause and cheers, the families of the candidates were thanked for the trust placed in the Instituto de Cultura and the presentation of Siu Ling I, Queen of the Floral Games 2024, was given, who with overflowing emotion and a heart full of gratitude said goodbye to her reign with a speech imbued with passion, and gratitude for the dreams fulfilled, thanks to the love and unconditional support of her family and friends.
Then, Carolina III, Queen of the Mazatlán International Carnaval 2024, walked down the catwalk and, full of emotion, gave a moving and emotional speech, in which she recalled her path to personal success, from her childhood dreams to her transformation as a queen. On several occasions her voice broke with emotion, but the audience encouraged her with applause and ovations, showing their appreciation and admiration for her sincerity and vulnerability.
Without allowing the emotions to subside, the voting stage continued. Red roses were assigned to María Fernanda, Melissa, Sandra, Lesly, Evelyn, Mariant, Mariana, Samantha, Fernanda Lizbeth, Grecia. Then the winners were announced: Lucero I, Queen of the Mazatlán Carnival 2025 and Desiré I, Queen of the Centennial of the Floral Games.
The papaquis rang (music) for the new queens of the Mazatlan International Carnaval 2025 and the public applauded the result. Minutes later, the members of the next Carnival court came out to greet Mazatlan residents and tourists from the balcony of the Plazuela Machado.
