-“Catástrofe,” a work directed by the EPDM instructor, was selected for performances in Mazatlán and Durango during the early months of 2027.

Performance artist and educator Xitlali Piña Poujol, of the Mazatlán Professional Dance School (EPDM), was selected through the national “Escenarios IMSS-Cultura 2026” open call with “Catástrofe.” This interdisciplinary piece explores the emotional experiences and transformations of two women through an intimate and playful lens.

This achievement strengthens the presence of dance and theater from Sinaloa within national circuits and recognizes the artistic work developed by Piña Poujol alongside Surasí Lavalle and Vanya Saavedra—EPDM graduates and instructors with whom she has collaborated for several years.

Directed by Xitlali Piña, “Catástrofe” is a full-length work that transcends the boundaries of contemporary dance, engaging in a dialogue with physical theater, the spoken word, bodily movement, and original music by Roberto Guerra and Willy Reyes.

The piece explores the various “catastrophes” two women undergo and how the meaning of a single experience can shift when narrated from different voices and perspectives. This approach allows the audience to easily identify with the work and join the performers on a journey that moves between emotion, emotional impact, and laughter.

“It is a very intimate and playful piece; just as the performers move through different states, the same happens to the spectator. The work leads the audience to various emotional frontiers,” stated Xitlali Piña.

The artist highlighted that this selection represents an opportunity to share a project built through a long process of research, exploration, and artistic care—an effort that has fostered its acceptance among diverse audiences. “I am truly very excited because, first and foremost, I want this work to be shared. We have dedicated a great deal of time to it; we entered a research laboratory to delve deeper, and it is a piece we have nurtured with great care,” she noted.

“Catástrofe” was recently presented at the Dance Hall of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in Mexico City, as part of a series dedicated to Women’s Month. The work has also been performed on stages in Tijuana, Mazatlán, and Culiacán.

Following its selection for the *Escenarios IMSS-Cultura 2026* program, the piece will extend its tour with performances in Mazatlán and Durango during the early months of 2027. Dates will be announced once the official schedule is released.

Xitlali Piña emphasized that the production is a generous offering aimed at audiences of all ages—from children and adolescents to adults and seniors—as its emotions, conflicts, and reflections can resonate with the experiences of any viewer.

This distinction is a source of pride for the Mazatlán Professional Dance School and the Mazatlán Municipal Institute of Culture, Tourism, and Art, as it showcases the talent, experience, and creative capacity of their instructors on a national stage.

With this recognition, Xitlali Piña Poujol reaffirms the strength of her artistic career and her commitment to sharing a work capable of engaging with diverse audiences, all while the stage production born in Mazatlán expands its reach to new venues across the country.
