The theater group TATUAS, the association “Un público se prepara A.C.,” and the University of Sonora—with the support of the Secretariat of Culture and the National Fund for Culture and the Arts—invite the public (ages 15 and up) to a special performance of the play “Marx in Soho” (a project supported by the PADID 2026 grant program). The event takes place on September 25 at 7:00 PM at Casa Haas.
The monologue takes on unique significance through the performance of Rodolfo Arriaga, an actor with an impeccable career, who portrays Karl Marx.
Synopsis: In the 21st century, Karl Marx—the iconic socialist thinker, economist, sociologist, and revolutionary philosopher—returns from the dead to visit London’s Soho. However, due to a bureaucratic error, he ends up landing in New York’s Soho instead.
Through this anecdote-filled monologue, Marx examines current social, political, and cultural realities, demonstrating—in a manner that is both playful and thought-provoking—that his theories on capitalism, as outlined in *Capital*, remain relevant 150 years later. The play demystifies and humanizes the philosopher, presenting him as an amusing and complex figure who shares intimate details about the hardships he endured alongside his wife, as well as the fierce, combative spirit of his daughter. Creators and Performance History
The original monologue was written by Howard Zinn (1922–2010), a prominent U.S. social historian and civil rights activist best known for his work *A People’s History of the United States*. The stage direction and adaptation are by Cutberto López, a member of the National System of Art Creators (FONCA).
*Marx in Soho* has enjoyed a significant run across the country, appearing at venues and events such as the National Center for the Arts (Cenart), the Puro Sinaloa Cultural Festival, the Monologue Festival – *Teatro a Una Sola Voz* (where Arriaga was honored for his work as a founder), and the 2025 INBAL season at the El Galeón Abraham Oceransky Theater.
