Centro Municipal de Artes

The School of Arts (Ing. Ricardo Urquijo Beltrán) opened its doors on November 6, 1989, as a response from the municipal government to the need to attend to the artistic training of children and youth in Mazatlán.

It is located between Constitución and Carnaval streets in the Historic Center of Mazatlán.

In its facilities adjacent to the Angela Peralta Theater, the Bachelor’s degrees in Contemporary Dance, Music and Singing are taught and classes in classical ballet, folk dance, film appreciation, plastic arts and theater are offered.

The artistic companies of the School of Arts are: the Classical Ballet Company, the Sinaloense Folk Ballet, the Mazatlán Camerata, the Angela Peralta Choir, the Guillermo Sarabia Choir, Delfos Danza Contemporánea, resident company of the Angela Peralta Theater; the Iguana Roja theater group, the String Orchestra, the Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Mazatlán Sinfoneta.

HISTORY

In its beginnings, the School of Arts gave classes in two buildings in the historic center leased for this purpose. It was made up of workshops on classical ballet, painting, sculpture and the “Enrique Patron de Rueda” School of Music.

In the old German Haberdashery (in Belisario Domínguez and Mariano Escobedo streets), painting and sculpture lessons were held, and in Sixto Osuna Street No. 13, music and classical ballet classes were given.

In 1990 the singing discipline was integrated and the formation of the Angela Peralta Choir and the Youth Symphony Orchestra began; tasks that crystallized two years later.

In 1993, the schools of artistic activities, dependent on the other department of Cultural Diffusion, were concentrated together with the Angela Peralta Theater.

There the School of Arts was born, which opened the workshops of folk ballet, visual arts, theater, cinema and literature.

The children’s choirs and the “Angela Peralta”, the Regional Band and the Youth Symphony Orchestra emerged.

Institutional consolidation led to the professionalization of the School of Music and the creation of the Professional School of Contemporary Dance. Later, the professional level was formalized in the Singing School.

Currently, three degrees are taught at the School of Arts of Mazatlán: Bachelor of Singing, Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Contemporary Dance.

The permanent participation of the School of Arts in cultural and social events, the high professional level of the teaching staff that teaches classes in the undergraduate degrees, and its excellent academic level, place it among the best institutions of artistic education in the region.
