In the grand finale of the XL National Singing Contest “Carlo Morelli”
Tenor Alejandro Yépez, a graduate of the Singing Degree from the Instituto de Cultura, Turismo y Arte de Mazatlán, won two prizes in the grand finale of the XL “Carlo Morelli” National Singing Contest.
Yépez managed to convince the judges with his voice and performance and although he did not finish in the first three places, he won two of the most important recognitions: the Mexico Ópera Studio (MOS) Award and the Special Fine Arts Award and now he hopes that his performance in the contest, allow him access to more competitions and audiences to enter the national and international labor circuit.
On Saturday May 27th, his brilliant incursion into the final stage of the most prestigious opera competition in Mexico held in the Main Hall of the Palacio de Bellas Artes, left Alejandro Yépez the satisfaction of measuring his voice before the most promising young voices of the national lyric and incidentally, obtain an economic stimulus.
For winning the MOS award, he earned 10,000 pesos, plus 50,000 pesos from the Special Prize for Fine Arts, an amount equal to that awarded to the third-place winner of the contest.
For the young tenor, his achievements are the result of effort, determination, discipline and his artistic training at the CMA, where the student, in addition to studying with prominent figures of the national opera, can participate in productions with the Ángela Peralta Choir, Guillermo Choir Sarabia or belong to the Mazatlán Instituto de Cultura’s Opera Workshop, a project directed by maestro Enrique Patrón De Rueda, one of the most brilliant figures of opera in Mexico.
“The most valuable thing (of participating in the Carlo Morelli Contest 2023) is having the experience of singing in the main room of Bellas Artes, it is an impressive room and participating with all the talent there, competing with them, was a great experience”.
On the decision of the judges in the final stage of the contest where he performed the arias “Ella mi fu rapita!… Parmi Veder Le Lagrime…” from the opera Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi and “Dies bildnis ist bezaubernd schön” of the opera “Die Zauberflöte” (The Magic Flute) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the tenor originally from León, Guanajuato, expressed:
“I felt very relieved that the effort was worth it, I feel that the judges were satisfied with my performance.”
“I did very well, I received good comments from members of the jury, from the organizers of the contest and many congratulations from people who saw me and hopefully more doors will open soon.”
He confesses that the presence of his family in the final of the contest was an incentive to win the competition.
“My family from León came to support me in the contest, in the room was my mother Teresa López, my sister Estefanía and my brother Alberto Yépez, he also studied singing at the CULTURA Music School and now he teaches singing in León” , the tenor concluded that this Monday, he will be back in Mazatlán.
What comes next? “Right now I’m seeing where I can have more auditions, contests.”
