Performing the great hits of mariachi music

International tenor Carlos Osuna, soloist of the Vienna State Opera will pay tribute to the great exponents of vernacular music through the concert ¡Así suena el mariachi!, on Thursday, July 20th at 8:00 p.m. at the Ángela Peralta Theater.

The Mazatlecan artist crossed the Atlantic Ocean to delight Port’s audience with “Amorcito corazón”, “Volver, volver”, “Abrázame” and “Como quien perdere una estrella”, among other romantic Mariachi songs that have become immortal in the voices of José Alfredo Jiménez, Pedro Infante, Javier Solís, Vicente and Alejandro Fernández, and other greats of music in Mexico.

Carlos Osuna will go out to conquer the stage accompanied by the Traditional Ensemble directed by Samuel Murillo, made up of musicians who play in the Sinaloa Symphony Orchestra of the Arts, mezzo-soprano Sarah Holcombe, voices from the Ángela Peralta Choir and the Folkloric Ballet of the Instituto de Cultura, Turismo y Arte de Mazatlán, directed by Javier Arcadia.

Happy to return to his home, the Mazatlecan appreciates the opportunity offered by the Instituto de Cultura, Turismo y Arte de Mazatlán, since in previous years the COVID-19 pandemic prevented him from carrying out his annual presentation at the Ángela Theater Peralta.

“(I am) Very happy to return to the Ángela Peralta Theater. Last year I was there with “La Traviata” but speaking of sad things, the pandemic arrived and since before the pandemic I had not been able to do my concert, it is a pleasure to return now with the theme “This is how the mariachi sounds”, exclaimed the international tenor.

The artist explains that the idea of the concert is to represent Mexican music, the most beautiful for decades of the most notable performers of vernacular music.

“I tried to make a selection between what I sing and what folklore dances, in a way that is balanced, that people are attentive and happy to be receiving beautiful, happy, sad, in the end the sad songs make you feel and they are beautiful, I think that live music, in general the mariachi, has that power to make you vibrate,” he said.

Carlos Osuna started singing at the age of 12 when he was studying in high school; then he entered the Ángela Peralta Choir where he ventured into lyrical singing under the tutelage of maestro Antonio González; Later he traveled to Mexico City to enter the artistic training program promoted by the International Society of Mexican Art Values, SIVAM.

Upon returning to Sinaloa, he entered the Culiacán Opera Workshop and then left for Cardiff in the United Kingdom where he spent a year and a half, auditioned for the Basel Opera, after a half year he arrived in Vienna, where he has been 13 years, since 2010.

Among his most important roles, tenor Carlos Osuna personified Narraboth from
the opera Salome at Carnegie Hall in New York. After his performance, the critics
called his voice “fiery and brilliant,” a good boost to his years of hard work.
vocal training and improvement of the operatic repertoire.

In his formation, extraordinary talents were added, such as teachers Enrique Patrón de Rueda, Martha Félix and Teresa Rodríguez.

In Europe, he successfully ventured on stages in Switzerland, Austria, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Italy, but he has also been recognized in Japan and New York’s Carnegie Hall. He is currently the resident soloist of the Vienna State Opera.

Tenor Carlos Osuna aroused the interest of world opera luminaries, with whom he has shared stages and master classes. Legends like Plácido Domingo, Ramón Vargas, Anna Netrebko, Rolando Villazón, Juan Diego Florez and the famous Argentine tenor José Cura, have underpinned his presentations and contributed to his formation. In May 2015, his career shone with greater intensity when he played Ismaele, the main tenor role in Verdi’s opera Nabucco alongside Plácido Domingo, who leads the list of the twenty best tenors in the world.

“I would love to sing in the best theaters in the world, as well as this (TAP) which is one of the best in the world, but I would like to sing in London at the “Royal Opera House”, at the “Milan Scale”, in Italy, I’m still preparing, and well, I won’t stop doing auditions, especially with agencies, and let’s see where the new challenges take me, for now I’m in Vienna until 2024 and I’m going to keep working”, he exclaimed.

For tenor Carlos Osuna, it is an honor to close the Spring Season in Mazatlán organized by the Instituto Municipal de Cultura, Turismo y Arte and that fills him with great pleasure because the saying “No one is a prophet in his own land” is broken, he is excited to meet again with the Mazatlecan public.
