Theatrical art as a cathartic and life-transforming balm to learn to cope with the days in confinement for crimes committed or accepted without guilt, raises the play “Caneros”, presented last Thursday at the Angela Peralta Theater.

The actor, playwright and director Ramón Gómez Polo, author of this theatrical text, directs on stage a piece armed with stories and tales of those who no longer have the wings of freedom, make theater as an emotional purge bathed in black humor so as not to go mad before their own misfortune.

The story comes to life through the stage performance of actors from the National Theater Company and the Iguana Roja company from Mazatlan, under the direction of Gómez Polo.

Produced by the Instituto Municipal de Cultura, Turismo y Arte de Mazatlán, “Caneros” was presented in Spring Season 2023, performed by Luis Rábago and José Carlos Rodríguez (CNT); Josar, José Manzanilla and Alejandro Careaga, from Iguana Roja.

The set design by Ángel Moreno and the dim lighting by Roberto Flores García contextualize the dramatic space that places the viewer in front of the cells of a prison, a small closet, a table and chairs where the inmates talk about their reality outlined by confinement, loneliness, abandonment, frustration, regret and resignation before what seems to be their destiny.

“Caneros”, a work that elevates Ramón Gómez Polo as the author of the dramatic genre, achieved an immediate connection with the audience that followed the plot from beginning to end and at times laughed at the stories of the characters.

The play lasts about an hour and at the end the audience applauded the actors as a reward for their dedication on stage
