Guillermo Arriaga, renowned writer, producer, film director and 2017 Mazatlán Literature Award winner will present his novel “Extrañas” in Mazatlán this Friday, June 9th, published by Alfaguara editorial in March 2023.

Special guest of the Letters for the Port program, promoted by the Instituto Municipal de Cultura, Turismo y Arte de Mazatlán in coordination with cultural promoter Laura Medina, Arriaga will talk about his most recent work during a meeting with Mazatlecan readers, this Friday at 7 pm at Casa Haas.

“Extrañas” [strangers] is a work whose central axis is a young English nobleman named William Burton, who in 1781 suffers an encounter that transforms his life.

During the development of the work, Burton meets great minds of his time in the midst of adventures that help him reveal the being he wants to become.

While this is happening, there are glimpses of the scientific discoveries and advances in the thought of individuals who are managing to separate themselves from the religious and aristocratic positions of their environment.

From his point of view, in the 18th century, the period in which the novel takes place, there is a detachment of the dogmatic visions anchored to religion from humanism and the Enlightenment.

One of the questions that arises in the novel is whether people with disabilities are animals or humans and, although at first glance it is obvious that they have human nature, enunciating it at that time allowed for the intelligent decisions that are made today.
