Xitlali Piña Poujol was invited in 1997 by Delfos Danza Contemporánea to stage “The Rite of Spring”, frombeginning in 1998 she joined this prestigious company with which she has toured nationally and internationally. She is currently a teacher at the Mazatlán Professional Dance School and is a new FONCA scholarship recipient (National Fund for Culture and the Arts).
Regarding the support received and the benefits of the scholarship, teacher, choreographer and dancer Xitlali Piña expresses:
“The support they have just given me is that of ‘Performance Creator with a Career’, I am going to work with different creators from different generations and with very different styles or references, they are Manuel Estrella and Claudia Lavista with a project called ‘There’s a cat in here,’ then I will work next year with a young choreographer called Melva Olivas and I will do the last project under the direction of Antonio Salinas.”
Another project is to disseminate my research on body practice called “Body+Space+Time” which I am going to carry out in three universities or three institutions that have Bachelor’s degree programs: the National School of Contemporary Dance and Classical Dance at the CNA of CDMX , with the National University of Chiapas in the Bachelor’s of Contemporary Dance and also the University of Performing Arts of Mérida, Yucatán. “I am going to develop my project as a performance creator, and at the same time I will also do the work of disseminating my research on body practices,” she added.
To fully comply with the commitments established by winning the scholarship, Xitlali Piña announced that she will have meetings with those involved and the idea is to bring them to Mazatlán to create links with them and the EPDM and be able to create a network, a fabric of connection with the school. .
How many pieces do you have planned to come to light?
“Three pieces are proposed in which I am going to work as a stage creator, but I will also be working with several artists from different disciplines in the work “Catastrophe”, I plan to do it, it is not done yet, so I will precisely work on it during 2024.”
She added that in total she will carry out three academic residencies to share her knowledge as a teacher, three pieces that she will work on as a performance creator, a performance project that she plans to do with several axes, focused on her growth as a performance creator and to disseminate her own research.
“It will be three years in which I will receive this support and I feel very grateful for the recognition of my career and for the support to continue my growth as a mature stage creator and continue with research and find new artist accomplices on the path that allow me to continue my development, they are new challenges, I am very happy to be able to share with other schools, which open the doors for me to disseminate my research on body practices “Body+Space+Time”.
