Mazatlán is in full swing with the start of Cultura en tu Casa, a program of the Instituto Municipal de Cultura, Turismo y Arte de Mazatlán to promote expressions of art in neighborhoods in the port.

Cultura en tu Casa is hosted in the programming of the Festival Cultural Mazatlán 2023, which begins this Friday, October 6th at eight at night in the square of Col. Adolfo López Mateos, with the presentation of the Jazz Band of the Municipal Center of the Arts, directed by maestro Omar Ríos.

Students from the CMA and graduates from the Higher School of Music of the Instituto de Cultura de Mazatlán will participate in this concert, who will share their passion for music with the public attending the free presentation on the López Mateos basketball court, located in the intersection of Cuauhtémoc and Gabriel Leyva streets.

The repertoire will be a mix of funk, swing and boleros pieces.

It will be the first official presentation with its new members because this workshop began at the beginning of the year as the students interested in playing jazz approached their teacher and began the musical journey. In its origins, the CMA Jazz Band operated under the guidance of maestro Carlos Betanzos, who retired from the school upon completing his work cycle.

“What I want to tell people is that they go, that they attend, that they contribute to us, that they give us repertoire, song themes and if they like jazz, if they are near Plazuela Machado when we have a rehearsal, they should come to the window, you are welcome, and we would like you to listen to us,” said maestro Omar Ríos.

The Jazz Band is made up of percussionists including a drummer, a young woman who plays the congas and timpani; in wind there is a clarinetist and a saxophonist; in the brass they have a trumpeter and a trombonist; There is also a flutist, a pianist, a vibraphonist; In the strings there are three bassists, a guitarist and a singer.

Omar Ríos invited children, young people and/or adults to come to the CMA and join the jazz band. Classes are taught on Wednesdays from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and on Thursdays from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. 2:00 p.m.
